Flared-Gas Mining Faces a Measurement Dispute It Cannot Easily Win
Operators claim substantial methane abatement at wellhead sites. Independent measurement specialists say the underlying baselines are largely unverified.
Wellhead mining — trucking generators and containerised machines to gas that would otherwise be flared — has become the industry's most-cited environmental argument. It rests on a comparison that almost nobody measures directly.
The claimed benefit depends on flare destruction efficiency: how completely a flare burns methane it is given. Operators typically assume the regulatory default. Field studies using aerial spectroscopy have repeatedly found real-world efficiency below that default, which would make the abatement claim conservative rather than inflated.
Why nobody has settled it
Direct measurement is expensive, site-specific and awkward for both sides. Producers have little incentive to document poorly performing flares, and miners marketing green attributes have little incentive to fund a study that might narrow their headline figure.
Two operators told Bitcoin Bounty Hunter they are now commissioning third-party site measurement anyway, on the calculation that buyers of environmental attributes will soon demand it and early data will be worth more than a favourable assumption.
